Marvellous Materials!

We have been learning about materials.

We collected some and sorted them into groups.

We then learnt about how materials are made of matter.
Matter is made of particles.
There are 3 states of matter.
We explored how particles behave differently in different states.
First we started as a solid.

Next we showed what happened when liquid changed to a gas.

Look at how the gas particles spread out when they are moving around!

Finally, Kat used a freeze ray like Gru in Despicable Me and changed the gas back into a solid!

We had so much fun, using drama to explore our Scientific thinking!

Thank you Elizabeth from Mitre Ten

During Discovery Time on Friday the 10 June, Elizabeth from Mitre 10 came to school to talk to us about plants.
We are wanting to beautify our south side garden at school and Elizabeth talked to us and showed us plants that are suitable and like to be planted on the south side of buildings.  She showed us a fuchsia (the ballerina plant), heuchera, lirirope and ferns.
Elizabeth was very generous and gave us some strawberries to plant at school.  Strawberries cannot be planted on the south side of the school they need lots of sun and lots of food.

We will use this information to design a garden suitable for the south side garden near our classroom.

We wrote some thank you letters to her.

Dear Elizabeth,

Thank you for the plants they were beautiful my favourite plant was the heuchera. Thank you for telling us about the plants and which ones would like the sun and not like the sun.

Science With Mrs OB

On the 9th June,  Room 3 and 4  had the opportunity to explore surface tension with Mrs OB a visiting lecturer of science. We loved dripping drops of coloured water onto a 20 cent coin with a pipette. We had to keep dripping the water onto the coin until the surface tension finally gave way. We predicted how many drops could fit on the coin and then tested to see if our thinking was correct.
Here are some of our stories about our science learning.

Surface Tension Experiment

We did experiments in science. We put red water on a coin it was 20 cents.

I practised dripping from a pipette in a lid. I guessed that 14 drops would fit on the coin.

We did an experiment with Mrs OB. We used dye and it was fun. We found out how many drops we could drop on our coin.  I guessed 12 drops would fit on the coin. We did an amazing job.

Maree showed me how to do an experiment. Then Bridget practised dropping the red dye in the lid. Then she did it on the coin and it got bigger and fatter and more like jelly. It was cool when the red dye got bigger, it spilt and went on the paper towel.

Exploring Surface Tension

Today we did work with Mrs OB. We did science. We used a pipette, a paper towel and a lid with dye in it.

I put 19 drops on my coin.

Mrs OB came to show us an experiment. We have a coin and red water. My prediction was 4 drops of dye would fit on the coin. We practised dripping and counted, then the red dye fell off.

Today we did experiments with Mrs OB. We got a pipette and sucked up the red water with the pipette. Then we dropped the water on the coin it was a 20 cent coin.

Exploring Surface Tension

Today Room 4 and Room 3 did an experiment with Mrs OB. We had red water a 20 cent coin and a pipette. We sucked up the red water with a pipette then we put it on the coin. Before we had to put it on the coin we had to think of how many drops I was going to drop on the coin before the water fell off.  I got it right but then the water fell off the coin. It was so fun because it looked like jelly. We didn’t know what it was because it looked like hair dye and red water, but it was just dye. I like science it is so much fun. I love science.

 Exploring Surface Tension

Today I went to Room 3, Mrs OB did an experiment. The experiment was about dripping red dye onto a 20 cent coin. She used a pipette I did it too. The pipette sucked up the red dye I dripped little drips on to a coin and I counted the drips. I guessed forty three I got it right, when I got to forty three the red dye fell off the coin. We explored surface tension.

Brooklyn Adventure Race

On Friday May 27th the Junior and Senior Syndicates participated in the Brooklyn Adventure Race. This race was inspired by the Godzone Adventure Race that went past Brooklyn School earlier in the year.
Students participated in teams of three and created a team name and had a team mascot to represent them.
The Junior Race consisted of orienteering, designing and sailing a boat  that would carry there mascot across cross the Brooklyn lagoon (paddling pool), cycling, an obstacle course and finally a sprint to the finish line.
We had a fantastic week designing, testing, and modifying our boats and then also practising our cycling and running.
Our favourite discipline was the cycling we just loved riding our bikes and scooters around the track at school.

P. S. The teachers had fun too!! Don't tell them we put their photos on the blog!
