Haere Atu- Room Four adaptation.



Adapted from the Big Book by Andre Ngapo.

Sandy and Namu were hungry.
They zoomed around the beach,
They zoomed around the boys and girls.
They zoomed around the mums and dads.

“Titiro! Look at all that lovely skin,” cried Namu.
“Let’s dig in,” cried Sandy.

They zoomed to a girl making sandcastles in the sand.
“Here is our lunch!” laughed Namu.
“Mmmmm. Delicious!”
“Yum!” said Sandy

But Bella jumped up. She slapped her arms and shouted,
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”

Off zoomed the sandflies over to a girl jumping in the waves.
“Kia tere! Quick!” cried Namu.
“Mmmmm! She tastes good,” said Sandy.

Emma ran out of the water.
She slapped and flapped her legs,
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”
Sandy and Namu were hungry.
Off they zoomed to a girl collecting shells on the beach.
“Here we go!” said Sandy.
“Slurp, slurp.”
“Delicious!” cried Namu.

Khloe stopped. She slapped and flapped her arms and legs.
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”
They zoomed to a girl swimming in the sea.
“Kia teri! Quick!” cried Sandy.
“Slurp, slurp, yum!” said Namu.

But Leighton stopped. She slapped and flapped her arms and legs.
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”


But Sandy and Namu were still hungry.
They zoomed to a girl playing with a beach ball.
“Here is our lunch!” laughed Namu.
“Mmmmm. Delicious!”
“Yum!” said Sandy

Nina stopped. She slapped and flapped her arms and legs.
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”
As the moon was rising Namu and Sandy zoomed around the town,
They zoomed around the boys and girls playing
They zoomed around the mums and dads having barbeques outside.

“Titiro! Look at all that lovely skin,” cried Namu.
“Let’s dig in,” cried Sandy.

They zoomed to a girl who was playing with her dolls.
“Here is our dinner!” laughed Namu.
“Mmmmm. Delicious!”
“Yum!” said Sandy


But Sara jumped up. She slapped her arms and shouted,
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your dinner today!”

Off zoomed the sandflies over to a boy building roads on his bed.
“Kia tere! Quick!” cried Namu.
“Mmmmm! he tastes good,” said Sandy.

Ollie jumped up. He slapped and flapped his legs,
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your dinner today!”

Sandy and Namu were hungry.
Off they zoomed to a girl playing with her cousins in her room
“Here we go!” said Sandy.
“Slurp, slurp.”
“Delicious!” cried Namu.

Mareikura stopped. She slapped and flapped her arms and legs.
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your dinner today!”
Namu and Sandy zoomed away. They spied a boy working in the garage with his Dad.
“Kia tere! Quick,” cried Namu.
“Mmmm! They taste good.”

Zye stopped.  He did not jump up and down. He did not slap his arms and legs.
He did not shout.  Instead he quietly reached up to the shelf…

“Aue! Look out!” cried Sandy.
“Haere, haere, fly away.
No dinner here for us today!”


Sandy and Namu woke up the next day with rumbly, grumbly tummies. They were hungry.
They zoomed around the pool,
They zoomed around the boys and girls.
They zoomed around the mums and dads.

“Titiro! Look at all that lovely skin,” cried Namu.
“Let’s dig in,” cried Sandy.

They zoomed to a boy who was playing on a noodle.
“Here is our lunch!” laughed Namu.
“Mmmmm. Delicious!”
“Yum!” said Sandy

“Ow!” shouted Jai, he slapped his arms and shouted,
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”


Off zoomed the sandflies, they looked around and spotted a boy diving into pool.
“Kia tere! Quick! Cried Namu.
“Mmmmm! He tastes good,”
said Sandy

‘Hey!” yelled Nardy.
He slapped and flapped legs.
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”
Off zoomed the sandflies, landing on a boy doing bombs into the water.
“Here we go!” said Sandy.
“Slurp, slurp.”
“Delicious!” cried Namu

“Ahh!” said Lennon.
He slapped and flapped his legs.
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”

They flew over to a boy diving like a dolphin in the pool.
“Kia tere! Quick!” cried Sandy.
“Slurp, slurp, yum!” said Namu.

“Ow!” cried Tane.
He slapped his arms and shouted,
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”

Finally they spotted a girl practising her dives and zoomed over.

“Here we go!’ said Sandy.
“Slurp, slurp.”
Delicious!” cried Namu.

Amelia stopped. She slapped her arms and shouted,
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your lunch today!”

Sandy and Namu were feeling even more hungry now!

They flew angrily down the road.
“Titiro! Look !” cried Namu.
“Let’s go,” cried Sandy.

The zoomed into a driveway where two boys were finding bugs to feed their chickens.
“Kia tere! Quick.” cried Namu
“Mmmm! They taste good.”

“Ahhhh!” cried James and Eli
They slapped and flapped their arms and legs.
“Haere atu. Go away!
We are not your supper today!”
Zooming away they spied a boy fixing the roof of a shed with his Grandad.
“Here is our supper!” laughed Namu.
“Mmmmm. Delicious!”
“Yum!” said Sandy

But Asher stopped. He slapped and flapped his arms and legs.
“Haere atu. Go away!
I am not your supper today!”

Namu and Sandy were exhausted. It was getting dark.
So they decided to fly into the camping ground at Quinney’s Bush.
“Titiro! Look at all that lovely skin,” cried Namu.
“Let’s dig in,” cried Sandy.


 Off zoomed the sandflies, they looked around and spotted a family camping in a tent.
“Here is our supper!” laughed Namu.
“Mmmmm. Delicious!”
“Yum!” said Sandy

The family in the tent did not jump up and down. They did not slap their arms and legs. They did not shout.

Instead… Rua quietly reached into his tent …

“Aue! Look out!” cried Sandy.
“Haere, haere, fly away.
No supper here for us today!”
